Experiencing Cancun

Our journey to Cancun in mid-April 2024, originating from Austin, Texas, unfolded with a brisk 2-hour-and-30-minute flight. Booking our entire trip through CostcoTravels proved to be a savvy move, securing us a comprehensive package that included hassle-free pick-up and drop-off services from Cancun airport.

Best time to visit:

For those seeking to avoid the crowds and higher prices, the shoulder seasons of April to May and September to November offer pleasant weather with fewer tourists. During these months, you can enjoy milder temperatures and more tranquil beaches.

If you're a fan of vibrant festivals and lively atmosphere, consider visiting during peak season from December to March. This period coincides with the region's dry season, providing ideal conditions for outdoor activities such as snorkeling, diving, and exploring ancient ruins. Just be prepared for larger crowds and higher accommodation rates.

For budget-conscious travelers, the rainy season from June to October offers lower prices on accommodations and fewer tourists. While you may encounter occasional showers, the lush landscapes and fewer crowds make it an attractive option for those seeking a more laid-back experience.

Getting Around:

Upon touchdown in Cancun, we swiftly arranged a rental car from Avis, scoring a fantastic deal at $400 USD (7,600 pesos) for a Chevy Suburban for four days. The driving experience mirrored that of the USA, with relatively sparse traffic. Though initially cautious, we found daytime driving safe, with periodic checkpoints serving as reminders to keep our IDs handy.

Booking resort:

In the hotel zone, there's a plethora of resort options catering to various budgets. For those with a Costco membership, booking through their platform offers excellent deals. We opted for an all-inclusive package, enticed by the exceptional service and courteous staff who don't expect tips but appreciate them nonetheless. While the culinary offerings may lack in vegetarian options, the spacious and immaculate rooms, especially those with ocean views, provide a memorable stay.

Day 1:

Arriving at 4 pm, we checked into our all-inclusive resort, Americana Fiesta Condesa, where we indulged in relaxation for the remainder of the day.

Day 2:

Rising early, we embarked on a three-hour journey to Chichen Itza, traversing toll roads and paying 2 tolls: 385 and 96 pesos each way. At the site, we negotiated with guides, securing a tour for half the official price of 1200 pesos. After exploring the ancient wonders, we ventured to Cenote Saamal, where the entry fee was 200 pesos. Following a rejuvenating swim, we returned to our resort around 6 pm, later exploring the bustling main market area via a $1 USD or 12 pesos bus ride.

Day 3:

Preferring a leisurely morning, we opted for a 12 pm Isla Mujeres boat tour. Upon arrival, we upgraded to a smaller vessel for added enjoyment. The tour included snorkeling opportunities and a stop at a restaurant, where we dined before venturing to the beach. North beach in the island is ranked #1 beach in Mexico and is in Top 20 beaches in the world. Back on land, we explored the island via a $40 USD/hr golf cart rental before returning to our resort via bus.

Day 4:

With our departure nearing, we devoted the day to resort relaxation. In the afternoon, we partook in the exhilarating Jungle Tour, costing $90 USD per person. This adventure, located conveniently across the road, provided a thrilling mix of boating and snorkeling, culminating in an afternoon of leisure at our resort.

Day 5:

On our final day, with a noon flight looming, we bid adieu to Cancun after a hearty breakfast, cherishing the memories of our unforgettable journey.

Conclusion:

Our journey in Cancun was a blend of discovery, relaxation, and adventure. From the awe-inspiring ruins of Chichen Itza to the serene waters of Cenote Saamal, each day unfolded with new experiences to savor. Our all-inclusive resort provided a welcoming sanctuary, where every comfort awaited us with a smile. Whether exploring the lively main market or unwinding on the tranquil shores of Isla Mujeres, Cancun captivated us with its diverse offerings. As we bid farewell to this captivating destination, we carry cherished memories, eager to return and embark on new adventures in the sun-kissed paradise of Cancun.
